Comic Review: Wayward #9

As I said at the end of the last issue, this series is trying to make me not like it. After Ayanae announced they had spiders as a new ally, I was afraid. As it turns out, I will not stop, even with so many spiders, because it is still that good.

This issue continues the trend of being vague yet intriguing. It opens in the past, with an attack on a village trying to find a little girl, but does not give answers right away about who she is or why she's there. We do see her as an adult later on, but it's been one of Wayward's strengths, leaving these threads loose to pick up on later without frustrating the reader by never moving anything forward.

The main characters are still split in two groups in this issue, but it feels like that will end soon. After she first disappeared, Rori came in contact with Emi through the window, and now Rori is actively searching for Emi to help them. For the first time, we get to see what Rori is capable of with her weaving abilities, and she becomes a little terrifying. In searching for Emi, she is almost ruthless in her efficiency and how she handles other people, driven by a sense of urgency that makes her almost terrifying, a turn that I did not expect her character to take.

On the other side, Emi, Nikaido, Ayane, and the Dirt Spiders are preparing to take the fight to the forces of (admittedly vague) evil they've been up against so far. In addition to plot, this serves as more character development for Emi, still feeling like everyone else is pulling the strings in her life as Ayane masterminds the plan. It's not clear how that will play out, but the fact that she has not lost that part of her motivation is good to see.

There have been multiple issues of set up, and payoff feels a little overdue. A big battle is imminent, and the setup has been well paced and good for character work, so I'm willing to go with it and excited to see what comes next.
